Smokey & His Sister - ST (1967)

I mentioned this one a few weeks back when I posted the St. George & Tana record. If you liked that one you should like this as well. Smokey (presumably his sister as well) came from Cincinnati, OH--he met Dylan after a concert there in 1965 and decided to become a folk singer (at least according to the Fuzz, Acid & Flowers book). In 1966 he and his sister Viki moved to Greenwich Village, which a year or two earlier would have been the place to be (the fact that at least 2 of the songs on this album are about how much cooler it is on the West Coast bear this out). They had a single and then this one lp which came out on Warner Brothers--it features some nice orchestral arrangements and Smokey & Sis harmonizing--sweet stuff overall.

I heard "In a dream of silent seas" on Internet radio recently, and is is a beautiful track. Smokey and sis, you did OK.

Actually, there were two singles (on Columbia) before this album. What I have been wondering is just WHO were these folks? I can't find any info on them anywhere, other that the liner notes to the LP. It's a nice record. Sweet. Too bad it didn't sell.

I think this album was not released on CD, but there is a Sundazed CD with their first singles and sessions. It's fantastic.

Hello,

The cd put out in '07 I think it was by Sundazed has some really GREAT music, 'Creators of Rain' is indeed something special as are many others, it appears they have included both of Smokey and his Sister's singles + the b sides + 9 more songs previusly unreleased, 13songs in all....

We have a small section for them on a gallery in our Gateway 5 of the ~ 70s invasion, we also review many other obscure artists of the era of the 60s - 70s and before and some new music too, see this link here ~

Were looking for the track listing of their original lp pictured above, and any rare photos/info of them as well, anyone have the tracklisting please write at skyelight7@yahoo.com

I think this Lp definitely deserves a quality vinyl reissue. It's a darn shame that Sundazed reissued the cd, but not the LP.

I need it on vinyl!!!!

I have a clipping of a news item I wrote in 1967 about Smokey and His Sister Viki for the Tampa Tribune. He moved to New York City twice from Cincinnati to perform his music in the Village. The second trip, October 1966, is when he worked out signing with Columbia Records in December and sent for his sister to join him.

Note to moderator. My news clipping has a mug shot of Smokey and one of Viki. I have a jpg of the clipping if you care to see it. Is there a way to attach it to a comment??
